Re: “Bella” — 8-year-old Beagle with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus

Dear Dr. Ruiz,

I am referring Bella, an 8-year-old spayed Beagle, for specialized assessment and insulin regulation following a recent diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.

Bella presented with polyuria, polydipsia, and weight loss. Urine analysis showed glycosuria and mild ketonuria, while her blood glucose was elevated at 18.5 mmol/L. She was started on Caninsulin® and transitioned to a controlled carbohydrate diet.

As optimal glycemic control is essential, I would appreciate your assistance in adjusting insulin dosage and developing a monitoring schedule. Mrs. Grant is motivated and keeping detailed logs of Bella’s appetite and fluid intake.

Thank you for your expert management of this case.

Yours faithfully,
Dr. Olivia King, DVM
