Re: “Misty” (Cat, 13 yrs) — Chronic Kidney Disease

Dear Dr. Menon,

I am referring to “Misty,” a 13-year-old domestic short-hair cat, recently diagnosed with Stage III chronic kidney disease, for further assessment and long-term management planning.

Misty presented with progressive weight loss, increased water intake, and intermittent vomiting. Examination revealed mild dehydration and a dull coat. Laboratory results showed a BUN of 68 mg/dL, creatinine of 3.1 mg/dL, and elevated phosphorus levels with suboptimal urine concentration (SG 1.020).

Initial treatment with subcutaneous fluids, a renal diet, and phosphate binders has been started, along with maropitant to control nausea. Her appetite remains fair, though weight loss continues.

Given her stage and persistent biochemical abnormalities, I would appreciate your expertise in developing a sustainable management plan, including advanced dietary and fluid therapy adjustments, as well as monitoring recommendations.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Emily Sen, DVM
