Dear Dr. Sharma,

I am referring “Rocky,” a five-year-old male German Shepherd, for further evaluation and management of tick-borne Ehrlichia canis infection.

Rocky presented with fever, lethargy, and anorexia lasting one week. Physical examination revealed pale mucous membranes, mild splenomegaly, and occasional epistaxis. His complete blood count showed anemia and thrombocytopenia, while PCR testing confirmed Ehrlichia canis.

Initial therapy with doxycycline (10 mg/kg OD for 28 days) and tick control medication has been initiated, along with vitamin supplementation. Although his general activity has slightly improved, thrombocytopenia persists, raising concern for chronic ehrlichiosis.

I would appreciate your expert opinion on long-term monitoring and evaluation for bone marrow suppression, as well as any additional treatment protocols you may recommend.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Rohan Patel, DVM
