Dear Dr. Gill,

I am referring to “Daisy,” a five-year-old dairy cow, for your advice on herd management and mastitis control following a confirmed Staphylococcus aureus infection.

The cow was presented with udder swelling, pain, and a sharp decline in milk yield over three days. The affected quarter was warm and tender, and the California Mastitis Test was strongly positive. Milk culture confirmed S. aureus.

Treatment included intramammary cloxacillin, NSAIDs for inflammation, and supportive hydration. Although initial improvement is seen, due to the contagious nature of this organism, I seek your guidance on biosecurity measures, milking hygiene, and possible culling strategies if recurrence occurs.

Your recommendations for preventing spread within the herd and maintaining milk quality would be greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Rajveer Kaur, BVSc
