Re: “Lakshmi” (Jersey Cow, 6 yrs) — Retained Placenta

Dear Dr. Arora,

I am referring to “Lakshmi,” a six-year-old Jersey cow, with retained placenta and ongoing uterine infection 36 hours post-calving.

Despite administration of oxytocin and a five-day antibiotic course (ceftriaxone + tazobactam), placental tissue remains partially attached, and a foul discharge continues. Her temperature remains elevated at 103°F, and her appetite is poor.

I have avoided manual removal to prevent endometrial damage. Given her incomplete response and the risk of endometritis, I request your assessment for uterine lavage and follow-up evaluation of reproductive health.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Karan Chauhan, BVSc
